Just acquired a 1989 325i 2door 5speed coupe with 177K

So far its great. I am happy to have a working car.
I would like to fix the following items and would appreciate any advices.
1. Need to remove the service light. I tried to shorting the wire in the diagnostic socket but that didn't seem to work.
2. The ABS light is on, and Brake Lining light is on, any idea how to fix those items or reset them?

Given how old the car is, what items should I be expecting to replace or have a look at?

And I am looking for some (used) items (will post to Classified section as well)
1. A better steering wheel such as one from M-Tech
2. Performance springs and shocks
3. Rear left side marker (Its red)
4. Front and rear brake rotors

Lastly I would like to replace the OEM stereo with an aftermarket CD player. Any instructions on how to do so? How much time will it take?
Any idea of what size of the door speakers?
Can I put 6x9s in the rear?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard! To reset the service light, I think you need to jump the connection for like 10 seconds. If the brake lining light is on, you'll probably need new brake pads, You can purchase a new sensor for like $4 bucks online, it's a simple plug and play thing. For the ABS light, you need to check the ABS connections. It's pretty PITA

Like fastbmw said, jump the connection, then turn the POWER on (first click when you turn the ignition), what about 10 seconds till you see all the green blocks light up :).

Things you should do immediately:

1) Timing Belt!!! If you only do one thing, do this!!!!!

Things that you should do:

2) All fluids (coolant, oil, tranny, diff) + filters (oil and fuel)
3) Tune up (air filter, plugs, cap & rotor, maybe ignition wires)
4) All rubber coolant hoses and rubber fuel lines
5) Degrease and clean everything! Engine, door jams, trunk etc. When stuff is clean you can spot problem areas easier such as rust.

The stereo is a pretty easy thing to replace, maybe an hour at the most. It's hard to put 6x9's in the rear shelf without cutting sheet metal. Door speakers are 5 & 1/4" I think
